Electrochemistry Notes Advanced Level - Form Six & Form Five

Electrochemistry: Is a branch of chemistry that deals with interchange of electrical energy and chemical energy.

This is a branch of chemistry that studies chemical reactions which take place in a  solution at the interface of an electron conductor (a metal or a semiconductor and an ionic conductor (the electrolyte), and which involve electron transfer between the  electrode and the electrolyte or species in solution.

If a chemical reaction is driven by an external applied voltage as in electrolysis, or if a voltage is created by a chemical reaction as in battery, it is an electrochemical reaction.

Electrochemical reactions occur as a result of transference of electrons from one species to the other. Electrochemical reactions are redox reactions.

Redox reactions: Are the one where oxidation and reduction take place simultaneously.

The process like rusting of iron articles, fading of the colour of the clothes, burning of the combustible substances such as cooking gas, wood, coal, etc, fall in the category of redox reactions. A large number of industrial processes like, electroplating, extraction of metals like aluminium and sodium, bleaching of wood pulp, manufacture of caustic soda etc, are also based upon the redox reactions.
