EU-Canada: 9th Security and Defence Dialogue in Brussels
EU and Canada Strengthen Security and Defence Cooperation
On 21 May, representatives from the European Union (EU) and Canada met in Brussels for the 9th Security and Defence Dialogue, reaffirming their commitment to closer cooperation on key security and defence matters.
During the meeting, both sides reviewed the progress made under the Security and Defence Partnership (SDP), focusing on areas of mutual interest such as defence cooperation, responses to hybrid threats, participation in Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions and operations, and enhancing security in maritime and space domains.
The discussions highlighted the growing strength of EU–Canada relations, driven by shared values and common approaches to addressing emerging global security challenges. Particular attention was given to developments in the Arctic and Indo-Pacific regions, where both partners see increasing strategic importance.
The EU and Canada also reaffirmed their continued support for Ukraine and expressed their determination to deepen collaboration across a wide range of security and defence initiatives.
The dialogue was co-chaired by Maciej Stadejek, EEAS Deputy Managing Director for Security and Defence Policy, on behalf of the European Union. Canada was represented by Scott Millar, Assistant Deputy Minister for Policy at the Department of National Defence, and Martin Larose, Deputy Political Director and Director General for International Security and Strategic Affairs at Global Affairs Canada.
